Councillor appeals for more speed signs on Heath Hayes road

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 00:00

A PETITION is calling for more speed signs along a busy Heath Hayes road – as drivers continue to travel up to twice the legal limit, it was claimed this week.

Councillor John Jillings is hoping to collect hundreds of signatures from local residents on and around Wimblebury Road after reports of speeding motorists and boy racers.

And now Cllr Jillings, who is Cannock Chase Council's leader for safer and stronger communities has warned that lives are being put at risk – and that it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

He is urging Staffordshire County Council to install extra speed signs to alert drivers to the limit.

"The residents and the parents are absolutely welcoming the petition," Cllr Jillings told the Mercury.

"They cannot believe we are getting something done about it."

Cllr Jillings said that because the road was straight with open area to one side some drivers 'psychologically' thought they could go at 60mph.

"Local residents say its just like a race track," Cllr Jillings continued.

"We have also got boy racers in the evening.

"This as got to stop before a serious accident occurs."

Cllr Jillings said a 'flashing' speed sign would be ideal for the road to remind drivers of the speed limit.

"I do not believe in putting speed cameras everywhere, only in certain areas," he said.

"Ultimately, I believe we should get more police on the streets.

"But the police say they have not got enough resources."

He said he had also spoken to concerned parents whose children go to Heath Hayes Primary School on the road.

"The golden rule applies that if you are driving down a road with street lights present if no signs show otherwise the speed limit for that road is 30 mph," he said.

"I am at the moment speaking with county highways with a view to installing some type of traffic calming measure on this road as a matter of urgency."

Anyone who would like to sign the petition should telephone Cllr John Jillings on 07891 838588.

Parents can also sign the petition at the reception of Heath Hayes Primary School.
