James scoops top award in young driver scheme

A HEDNESFORD teenager has beaten 40 other youngsters from around the county to a top prize after his outstanding performance in a young driver training scheme.

The pioneering scheme, run by Staffordshire County Council, involved young drivers testing a hi-tech black box system, developed by GreenRoad Technologies, which monitored how they drove.

Following the six month trial, 19-year-old James Prosser had managed to sustain the highest level of driving skill and was recognised for his achievements at an awards ceremony in Stafford.

"The scheme really helps you to focus on your driving and to reflect on where you are going wrong – I would really recommend it," said James.

"It was great to be a part of something world breaking too," he added.

Families of the young drivers and road safety campaigners all enjoyed the 'glittering' awards evening, said a council spokesman, which was also a celebration of the 'stunning success' of the trial.

The black box is an integral part of Staffordshire's Young Driver Coaching Programme, which has now attracted insurance giant Admiral into coming on board, offering a 25 per cent discount to drivers who have signed up.

The council spokesman added: "Interest in the uniquely innovative Staffordshire scheme is pouring in from around the planet.

"The initiative has already received international TV and media coverage and expressions of interest to take up the scheme have started to flood in from other councils both nationally and internationally."

The black box records acceleration – cornering and other driver behaviours, giving instant feedback on a dashboard warning light system and feeding into a computer record back home.

By looking at their driving patterns with their families and road safety trainers, young drivers can learn about how to improve and develop their driving skills.

The black box will now be adopted as a permanent addition to the driver training programme.

Judy Walsh, of national road safety campaign Roadsafe, said: "The scheme is really innovative, marrying advanced technology with the vision and drive of road safety professionalism.

"It's a marriage that could save lives worldwide."
